There were times during the 2004 elections that I thought this day would never come, but Tom DeLay finally got his due. It was well-known among Texas Democrats, and indeed, Democrats around the country knew that DeLay was influencing Texas elections unfairly, but many thought him too powerful to oppose.
It took almost six years, but DeLay was finally convicted and sentenced for channeling corporate money to Texas Republicans, which is illegal in the state. In the course of the investigation, DeLay, who thought of himself as untouchable, was forced to step down from his House leadership position and then resign from Congress. Because of his arrogance and his deeds, I cannot say this latest outcome has displeased me.
