When President Obama won the Presidency in 2008, I'll bet he didn't count on having days like yesterday. I signed on to the Internet early Tuesday to be met with the headline that U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson had ruled that not only did Congress not have the authority to require persons to purchase health insurance, but he also said that he could not remove that one piece from the law; therefore, he declared the entire legislation unconstitutional. My first thought was, "Wow, the President sure needs this as a distraction when he is trying to deal with really serious problems!"
Picture President Obama extremely worried about the Egypt situation, having to talk to President Mubarak, who has been a strong U.S. ally for many years, and convince him that it is time to step down from his presidency for the good of Egypt. Also, realize that the President has been having to gauge what and how much to say to the crowds of protesters and the world so that it is clear that he supports democratic change while not seeming to have our government overstep our bounds in terms of the decisions that should and must be made by the Egyptian people. I'm sure he has been having many serious meetings with a number of advisors about this uprising that clearly has international ramifications.
But, on top of all this, poor President Obama had to find out that Judge Vinson had taken the extraordinary step of ruling that the health care reform legislation is unconstitutional. What an needless diversion from the important business at hand! I'm thankful we have a leader who is intelligent, knowledgeable, and keeps a cool head in the midst of all that he must deal with. And, I'm truly sorry we have to put up with Republicans having as a major goal the repeal of HCR and judges who are willing to do their bidding.
