Democracy Prevails (D.P.) is an organization of volunteers that supports progressive political candidates. The Democracy Prevails members are proactive about progressive government, are not afraid to travel a few hundred miles on weekends through the 9th Congressional District distributing candidate literature and campaign materials. We also buy radio ads in support of our candidates. We travel to events where many people congregate such as the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, the Flea Market and Gun Show in Hillsville both attracting thousands of people. Democracy Prevails volunteers raised and collected money (average of $33,000) to provide a presence in the 9th district for each of the following candidates: John Kerry, Jim Webb and Barack Obama. In the 2008 campaign large disbursements included: campaign materials- $17,000, 500 large signs- $6200, handbills- $1000, and 1100 radio ads for $6000. In addition we reach out to our friends in SW Virginia, being present at political dinners, lunches, fish fries, cookouts, parades and many other events.
This year we are facing a critical election. In November, Virginia will decide if we are truly a blue state. The nation is watching Virginia and we need to show that we are ready to continue with progress in Virginia by electing Creigh Deeds for Governor, Jody Wagner for Lieutenant Governor, and Steve Shannon for Attorney General. As has happened previously, the localities will be responsible for buying their own campaign materials and we at DP hope to be able to buy in bulk and help smaller localities in Southwest Virginia have access to the campaign materials they need.

We depend on you to fund our all-volunteer efforts. We do this work because we believe in activism, that is, being out front in helping progressive candidates. We know that you believe in doing your part, too, so please donate liberally to keep democracy alive in the 9th District, and keep Virginia blue.
